Figurative Language

Simile - The comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid.

Metaphor - The comparison of one thing to another without the use of like or as.

Personification - When you give human qualities to an object or animal.

Alliteration - The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Idiom - A fixed expression that has a figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning.

Euphemism - A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

Onomatopoeia - The formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.

Hyperbole - Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
